International Race:

Congratulations to all K1 athletes who competed in the CYTRIFED International competition on a windy Sunday in Limassol. K1 athletes were on the podium in all categories. A big thank you to Bambos and the organising team and the 100 volunteers who marshalled the course for the race.

K1 Race and Try-a-Tri

The K1 Triathlon Club once again hosted the charity ‘Try a Tri’ on Sunday 16th October and managed to raise over £100 for Cancer Research.

Over 30 competitors, some of whom were attempting their first ever triathlon, lined up for this, the last K1 triathlon of the season.

The event kicked off at 8 am with the long course swimmers starting a minute before the short course.  First out of the water on the 750m long course swim was Jo Jones who maintained her lead around the 20km bike leg.  Mal Rose, who came out of the water in sixth place, chased hard and it took him until about 400m from the finish of the 5km run to eventually catch Jo and grab the win, finishing just 15 seconds ahead of Jo.

There was also a pretty close finish in the short course with 90 seconds separating the top three.  Mike O’Ryan took the lead in the swim, and from then on, never looked back, taking the honours in a time of 51mins 30secs.  This was despite an excellent effort from Sarah Healy, who having left the sea in 19th place, recorded the fastest times on the 15km bike and on the 3km run, to take an excellent second place. Ju Cole also had a lot to do after exiting the water in 12th, but worked hard and recorded the second fastest run leg to ultimately take a well earned third place.

The club would like to say a huge thank you and well done to everyone who took part; especially the ‘first timers’ who hopefully have seen that this great sport is definitely not just for ‘elite athletes’ but for anyone who likes to simply get fit and have a go!  New members will always be made welcome, whatever your standard of fitness or experience.

ITU Age Group World Champs, Hawaii

A week before the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, one of the former K1 Members, Bev Childs, one again excelled in her age group, achieving a 29th position at the ITU Age Group World Champs, Honolulu, Hawaii. Her splits for the race were: 29 min swim, 1h13 bike and 51 run, giving her an overall of 2h36. We look forward to a report from her when she gets back home!

Well done Bev!

Club and RAF champs – Sunday 21st August

by Stef Parry

Race-day saw some really excellent racing with both the short and long course races proving highly competitive.  In the short course, the race for 2nd, 3rd and 4th was one of the best I’ve seen. With only 13 seconds separating the three places, Jason, Daz and Nick really had to push themselves on the run.

In the long course, visitor Ian Phillips gave Daz Cole something to chase with an excellent swim.  Ultimately Daz proved just too strong, catching and overtaking Ian on the bike and cementing his victory with a strong run.

The long course also saw the RAF (Cyprus) Triathlon Championships.  Congratulations to:

Daz Cole - RAF (Cyprus) Triathlon Champion

Mal Rose - RAF (Cyprus) Triathlon Runner Up

Colin Parkinson - RAF (Cyprus) Triathlon Third Place

Inter-services (Cyprus) Race – Sunday 25th September.

by Stef Parry

The arrangements for the IS race have been finalised. The teams will consist of 6 athletes with the first 5 to count.  The race will be scored on race positions and the team with the lowest combined score will win.  It is hoped that scoring this way will capture the ethos of services triathlon; aggressive racing where every place counts and everyone is really motivated to chase down the athlete in front.

James Redler has been chosen to lead the Army team, Daz Cole the RAF team and, it is hoped, that Kev Flint will lead an invitational team consisting of anyone not able to race for the Army or the RAF. Finally we are hoping to invite a Cypriot Federation team.  With the team captains are free to choose their teams the RAF Champs on the 21st of August would be a great time to prove your fitness!!!!
